This kinda reminds me of my gnostic psychobabble phase where I stumbled into camera mode while operating in engine mode.
There’s another duality worth considering here :
brain churn x field connection.
They’re mutually exclusive yet braided in interesting ways.
Setting each dial to max creates distortions like the brightness / contrast setting or bass / treble.
All Brain churn no field connection is actuarial living where everything is underwritten. These are people who believe that love is just a bunch of undiscovered chemistry lessons.
They’re also people who endlessly need to fact check rhetoric that’s generating strong goosebumps in others.
All field connection no brain churn are heroin trips. Goosebumps all the way down. All gas no brakes.
LLMs represent a braiding where synthetic brain churning clashing with human prompts could plausibly catalyze a field connectivity similar to someone deep in Hare Krishna chanting or evangelical trances.
It feels like we are entering into an era dominated by an ability to connect with fields rather than make brains churn.
This puts me in mind of how our understanding and of the human genome is progressing. At first it seemed like the DNA was the camera and the RNA was the engine but it turns out there is a ton of mixing via regulatory systems, the shapes things take and factors in the environment. It would be much easier to understand if DNA was actually a blueprint and RNA just decoded it but alas it's much more complicated. I wonder how the approaches scientists are currently using to understand regulatory networks might be relevant to these weird feedback loops we are constantly faced with now.
Certain YouTube maker channels may be “both” media. Many examples out there of chattering videos. And the “change the belt on your washing machine” are pure engine.
But there are some that teach practical skills and have a message behind them. The “Essential Craftsman” shows building houses and other things (engine), but also advocates for people to learn trades, how to be a workmanlike and conscientious, etc, which could influence subscribers to change their behavior (speech/camera). Maybe Andreas Spiess, who does microcontroller maker videos (maybe he is just more clowning then speeching so is more pure engine.
A maker channel that shows people how to build LoRA networks or Helium networks to produce a distributed wireless mesh network to evade censorship or The State could be such a combo.
Curious if the concept of "Language as Symbolic Power" might be useful to you. It has some overlap with:
* Language <- (shapes & is shaped by?) -> Perception (of all forms of reality, physical or social)
* Language <-> Constitutive/constructive of social reality (language has literal power in social reality, to the extent of believe/investment by social actors)
* Perception (physical reality / social reality) <-> Action (physical or social)
* Action (physical or social) changes reality
Like it seems like could be related to, how does the current moment's OODA loops look like, when perception + action are heavily mediated by media and social reality, and not "just" perception of physical reality fighter jet altitude.

Maybe they can build rather than contain narrative with an ai sense making engine. Perhaps not to the level you are talking about.
